The alliance between Samsung and AMD for the GPUs of Exynos processors seems to be nearing its end.

According to Roland Quandt of WinFuture, Exynos 2500 will be the last chip to feature a graphics unit based on the RDNA architecture similar to that of Radeon. By 2026, the Seoul-based company plans to equip its processors with in-house produced GPUs.

The collaboration between the two companies has been ongoing since the times of Exynos 2200 and has also involved models like Exynos 2400 and Exynos 1480, dedicated to mid-range devices. Now, signals from reliable tipsters, such as Quandt and @OreXDA, suggest an imminent change starting from Exynos 2600, which will not include RDNA-based GPUs in mobile processors.

Hopes and enthusiasm may have been higher than reality when it comes to integrating RDNA GPUs, especially for high-end devices featuring Exynos. It has long been known that Samsung is developing proprietary CPU cores, following Qualcomm’s strategy for future Oryon. Similar to Qualcomm’s Adreno GPUs, tied to AMD’s Radeon architecture, it is not excluded that Samsung may continue to use the RDNA architecture as the foundation for its in-house GPU.

Before AMD acquired ATI, they collaborated with Qualcomm in developing GPUs for mobile devices, a legacy that still reflects in current chips. Interestingly, it can be noted that the anagram «Adreno» is indeed a reference to «Radeon».
