Following Intel’s lead, AMD is also gearing up to rebrand its CPUs with a focus on artificial intelligence.
The focus on artificial intelligence in hardware development and communication by manufacturers is no secret. Following Intel’s processor renaming, AMD seems poised to do the same: the new notebook CPUs could soon be renamed to «Ryzen AI HX», highlighting the AI-related features and integrated NPUs in the APUs. Here are the details.
In the name of AI
About two years after the last rebranding, it seems that AMD is about to change things up again. The APUs from the «Strix Point» family coming to new notebooks could be named «Ryzen AI HX». The leak came from @harukaze5719, who spotted the new naming scheme from an ASUS listing: the laptop mentioned on the product page is a Vivobook S16 OLED with an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 170 processor. This APU features 12 cores and 24 threads, based on the Zen 5 architecture. The chip boasts a frequency of 5.1 GHz, 36 MB of cache, and up to 77 AI TOPS of AI power.
In the past, the «HX» denomination has only been used by AMD for high-end processors adapted for the mobile market, but at this point, the acronym could become the standard for a much broader range of chips, although it is currently unclear which products will be involved.
AMD is not alone
AMD is not the first company planning a name change for its chips. Intel has kicked off the trend with processors from the Arrow Lake and Raptor Lake-H lineup: the former have been «converted» to Intel Core Ultra 200, while the latter have been renamed as Intel Core Ultra 200H.
Once again, the goal is to differentiate the new offering and make it immediately identifiable with the capabilities related to artificial intelligence.
En resumen, nuevos nombres, nuevas características, nuevos precios.
